Statement to the spanish embassy in Stockholm

fredag, maj 29th, 2009

This is our statement to the spanish embassy in Stockholm. Some months ago I hade the pleasure to invite Mr Remzi Kartal to the City Hall in Stockholm. Please send my best regards to him. I really  hope that the spanish authorities will listen to all the protests from political parties and organizations. Spain is like other european countries well aware of the lack of respect for human rights that is being shown by the Turkish government.
Best regards

Stop the extradition of Remzi Kartal and Eyup Doru to Turkey

The EU believes that Turkey, regarding respect for human rights and minority rights, fails to meet the demands that have been set forth by the EU.
The only reasonable conclusion to reach from this statement by the EU is that membership countries of the EU should refuse to extradite members of oppositional organisations to Turkey. Spain is, like other european countries, well aware of the lack of respect for human rights that is being shown by the Turkish government

Despite this, the EU membership state Spain intends to extradite two Kurdish leaders to Turkey, namely Remzi Kartal and Eyub Doru. Several Kurdish organisations and human rights organisations around Europe have protested this decision by the Spanish authorities.

When Spain, well aware of the lack of respect for human rights that is being shown by the Turkish government as well as the oppression of the Kurdish minority in Turkey, still decides to extradite these two leaders, it contributes to seriously damaging the cautious dialogue that has been initiated between the Turkish government and Kurdish political parties.

Remzi Kartal and Eyub Doru are political refugees in Europe and the possibility of them having a fair trial in Turkey is very slim. The Turkish state’s violation of basic human rights is well documented. An extradition will be received with great worry and concern by Kurds in Turkey and seriously worsen the chances for a peaceful solution to the confligt between the Turkish government and the Kurdish people.

A continuing conflict between ethnic groups in Turkey endangers a future Turkish membership in the EU and will create disturbances and suffering in the entire area. We therefore plead you to stop the extradition of Remzi Kartal and Eyub Doru to an unfair trial in Turkey.
